Adult Long-Term Anger Management

 

Population Served/Target Population:  Adult males with a history of aggressive/assaultive behavior resulting in Criminal Justice System involvement. 

 

Admission Criteria:  

  1. No indications of MR/DD or a Thought Disorder. 
  2. Prior anger management treatment with subsequent criminal justice system involvement related to aggressive/assaultive behavior. 
  3. Court system involvement (placed on probation). 
  4. Willingness to participate.

 

Treatment Plan Goals:

  1. Autobiography Assignment (Month 1 – 3).  The Autobiography assignment consists of multiple sections (A – F) and is designed to assist with identifying past and present situations that may be impacting behavior. 

 

  1. Victim Impact Assignment (Month 3 – 6).  Victim Impact consists of multiple treatment assignments including:

Victim Impact – At various points in time after the offense. 

Victim Apology Letter

Restitution Plan--The goal of this group of assignments is to develop empathy skills and an understanding of the impact of the behavior on all individuals involved. 

 

  1. Relapse Prevention Plan (Months 6 – 12).  Consists of three sections:

Section A:  Problem Identification and Examination (5 – 10 Section A Worksheets)

Section B:  Coping Skills Development – Modification of Behavior

Section C:  Maintaining Adaptive Behavior

The overall goal of relapse prevention is to increase the awareness and the range of choices an individual has in managing their behavior. 

 

  1. Emotion/Anger Monitoring (Ongoing).  Use of emotion logs and Pre-Group Focus forms to begin identifying problematic situations and the emotions and the thoughts surrounding these situations.  This information is useful in completing the Relapse Prevention Plan. 

 

  1. Various printed and video material may be utilized throughout the course of treatment to highlight and examine various topics related to relationships, communication skills, anger management skills, impact of violence, etc. 

 

Model of Treatment:  Cognitive-Behavioral/Relapse Prevention.  Recovery Model. 

 

Performance/Discharge Criteria:  Satisfactory completion of Treatment Plan Goals, including no further criminal behavior related to aggressive/assaultive behavior.
