Rather than creating their own indexes, meta services utilize the indexes of existing engines. Better meta services query multiple engines simultaneously and return results without redundancy. Typically, to expedite the process, they query a small portion of targeted indexes. Consequently, their coverage of the Web may be shallow.

These finding tools are particularly useful for discovering known works or quick facts. They do not perform well for topical or in-depth research.
