GENERAL MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
DIAGNOSTIC/MENTAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT SERVICES Diagnostic assessment services are designed, through face-to-face contact, to determine the functional level, psychological state, and contributing medical conditions of individuals and to formulate a diagnostic impression through the use of psychological testing and clinical interviewing for the purpose of establishing the nature and extent of treatment which is indicated for a particular individual. This assessment is provided by qualified mental health practitioners (psychologists, psychology assistants, social workers, psychiatrists, and counselors) and is sensitive and responsive to the needs of persons from varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds, persons with disabling conditions, and varying social and physical environments that affect the person’s functioning and mental health. Prior to the implementation of any mental health treatment, it is essential that the nature of the individual's problems be clearly assessed in order to determine the extent of the individual's problems, potential sources of the problems, physiological condition, and to establish possible solutions. Assessment is conducted through the gathering of demographic information, completion of a psychosocial history, a review of a physical health assessment (self-report), mental status examination, and may include formal psychological testing. This process is generally referred to as diagnostic assessment and is a first component to any treatment program at this agency. Mid-Ohio Psychological Services, Inc. has been identified as the primary agency within the community to provide these services to the quasi-forensic population, and as the secondary provider for these services for the general population and sexual victims. Diagnostic assessment services are available by appointment during the regular hours of operation of the agency.
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH COUNSELING THERAPY SERVICE This face-to-face verbal interaction is designed to help reduce the impact of the individual's mental illness or emotional disturbance on their day-to-day life. Through counseling, individuals are aided in maximizing the quality of their life through utilization of traditional therapeutic techniques, which aid the individual in interfacing with their environments. Mid-Ohio Psychological Services, Inc. is the primary provider for this service to the quasi-forensic population, and the secondary provider for the general population and sexual victims as identified by the Fairfield County ADAMH Board's Community Service Plan. This service is provided by appointment during regular business hours.
COMMUNITY PSYCHIATRIC SUPPORTIVE TREATMENT (CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES) Community Psychiatric Supportive Treatment Services (CSPT) provide an array of services delivered by a community based, mobile, multidisciplinary team of professionals and paraprofessional. Services are directed towards adults, children and adolescents and will vary with respect to hours and type and intensity of services, depending on the changing needs of each individual. Community psychiatric support services are expected to complement other services already in place for the individual. The purpose of CSPT services is to encourage the individual’s multi-system involvement as appropriate and to ensure continuity and effectiveness of delivery of services and/or systems to the individual.
PHARMACOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT /SOMATIC SERVICES (PSYCHIATRIC) Pharmacological management services are designed as medical interventions, including physical examination, prescription or supervision of medication, and medical interventions to address the physical health needs of the person served. These services are provided in a face-to-face fashion by a physician who is qualified to provide psychiatric services. The psychiatrist is sensitive and responsive to the needs of persons from varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds, persons with disabling conditions, and varying social and physical environments that affect the person’s functioning and mental health. Pharmacological management /somatic services are provided to clients following the completion of a diagnostic assessment service and are generally performed in conjunction with counseling services. The diagnostic assessment must reflect that the individual who is to receive these services must experience a condition which is likely to benefit from medication or which requires a physical assessment to rule out a medical condition which substantially impacts the mental well-being of the individual. Mid-Ohio Psychological Services, Inc. is identified in the Community Service Plan as the secondary provider for these services for the general population of the community. Mid-Ohio Psychological Services, Inc. provides these services for Medicaid clients and clients who have some other means of payment for services. Pharmacological management/somatic services are provided by appointment only, during regular business hours. Mid-Ohio Psychological Services, Inc. does not provide these services on an emergency basis. Any individual who requires this service on an emergency basis will be referred to the Emergency Services system in a fashion consistent with the established linkage agreement.

FORENSIC SERVICES Forensic mental health services are face-to-face evaluations conducted by order of the court to address the following types of issues involving persons interacting with the legal system: competency to stand trial, sanity at the time of the commission of an offense, post-NGRI (Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity), pre-sentence, mitigation of penalty, mitigation of death penalty, domestic violence, competency to be a witness, adult parole authority (parole revocation), psychological effect of an act upon the victim, domestic relations (for custody and guardianship), juvenile dependency (neglect or delinquency), bind-over, sexual predator, or other specific issues directly related to the application of the law with regard to a mental health condition. This agency serves as the secondary provider of this service for the courts (Municipal and Common-Pleas--including Juvenile and Domestic Relations) in Fairfield County. Forensic services are provided by appointment only, generally during regular business hours, and may be provided at the local jail if appropriate. SEXUALLY ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR
SEX OFFENDER TREATMENT Adults Sex offender treatment is designed for adult males, ages 18 and over who have engaged in a sexual offense. Participants must admit to having engaged in sexually abusive behavior. Clients may be referred at any point in the judicial process, but are generally referred for services post conviction. Clients may be referred by the Court, probation department, and attorneys or may simply seek services on their own. Clients complete a formal evaluation. Most program participants will attend weekly group sessions and occasional individual sessions as needed. As a condition of participation in this program, participants must sign a release of information form to facilitate communication with the appropriate court that is involved in the case.
The treatment approach to this group follows a cognitive-behavioral model, with some insight-oriented focus as well. This approach is based on the belief that members can develop some understanding and basis for new skills through insight, but successful treatment depends on the development and implementation of new skills to facilitate a long-term plan of recovery. The group approach offers members a safe place to learn and practice new skills with peers. Retention in this program is dependent upon continual efforts and progress toward meeting treatment goals. Group counselors and individual counselors, where applicable, will consult to determine appropriate recommendations and treatment approaches. Court authorities will be advised of treatment non-compliance issues.Successful discharge occurs when clients have attained all treatment goals listed on their treatment plans. Generally, this includes having completed all homework assignments and having demonstrated an ability to implement new skills outside of sessions. Most participants will be in the group for two years or more. Successful discharge does not guarantee that no new offending behavior will occur. Discharge occurs when members have gained maximum benefit from the program, including knowing personal risks and knowing when to return to counseling should new problems arise. AdolescentsSex offender treatment is designed for males, ages 13 to 17 who have engaged in a sexual offense. Participants must admit to having engaged in sexually abusive behavior. Clients may be referred at any point in the judicial process, but are generally referred for services post conviction. Clients may be referred by the Court, probation department, and attorneys or may simply seek services on their own. Clients complete a formal evaluation. SEXUALLY AGGRESSIVE YOUTH TREATMENT The program is designed for young males, ages generally ranging from 9-13 years. Clients will participate in an evaluation or diagnostic assessment to determine eligibility for the program. If deem appropriate for group, the client will attend weekly group sessions and individual sessions as needed. The treatment approach to this group follows a primarily cognitive-behavioral model, with minimal insight-oriented focus as well. This approach is based on the belief that members can develop some understanding and basis for new skills through discussion and practice. Successful treatment depends on the development and implementation of new skills as a way to establish a return toward a healthy social and sexual development track. The group approach offers members a safe place to learn and practice new skills with peers. The group capitalizes on a developmental stage in which peer influences are very important. Individual sessions are conducted as needed as an adjunct to group sessions to assist with group assignments and to address additional therapy goals. Successful completion of the group is based on the adolescent's performance on the group assignments as well as other treatment goals. Discharge occurs when members have gained maximum benefit from the program, including knowing personal risks and when to return to counseling should new problems arises. Completion of the program is not based on attending a set number of sessions or attending for a pre-determined length of time. Most participants will attend the program for approximately 1 ½ to 2 years.
SEXUAL ABUSE SURVIVORS TREATMENT The program is designed for four different groups of clients:
All participants must be sexual abuse survivors. All referrals will receive a diagnostic assessment, if deemed appropriate for participation in the program; the client will participate in weekly group sessions and individual sessions as needed. Cognitive behavioral, Insight Therapy, and Psycho-education are the primary models of treatment used. Techniques may be drawn from other disciplines to fit the needs of the group. Participants will learn to identify sexual anatomy and gain knowledge of human reproduction and sexual functioning. Participants will explore their own sexuality in an appropriate manner while reducing their use of inappropriate sexual exploration. Group members will learn to communicate with parents and care givers about their sexuality and sexual maturation. Upon discharge, group members should have successfully developed, and should be consistently implementing coping skills to help them through the recovery process. The group members must also be able to transfer these skills from the learning environment to their school, home, and community environments.
ANGER MANAGEMENT SERVICES Anger management services are designed for adult males and females with a history of aggressive/ assaultive behavior resulting in Criminal Justice System involvement. Clients are referred by a Judge, probation officer, attorney, or Children Services. The client will complete a diagnostic assessment with clinical staff to determine if the person is appropriate for the program, after which they will receive weekly group services and individual services as needed. A release of information (ROI) for on-going communication with the referral source is a mandated component of the program. Through treatment, clients will attempt to decrease their involvement with the criminal justice system for anger related offenses. Program participants develop skills to successfully manage their anger in a range of life situations. The short-term program is 12-weeks. Clients who have completed the short-term program may continue treatment on a long-term basis. The long-term program is not a fixed length group—participants remain in the program until they gain long-term management of their anger.Anger management services are provided by appointment only, generally during regular business hours.
PARENTING INTERVENTION SERVICES This program is designed for an adult caretaker who has a mental health diagnosis and who has custody of a child with chronic and recurrent disruptive behaviors. Clients are referred to the Parent Intervention Program because they have demonstrated a lack of ability to consistently care for their children in a satisfactory manner. Clients can be referred by Children Services, Juvenile Court, a school, or by a therapist. On average, it is expected that participants will attend the program for approximately 12 months. The groups are: Parent(s) with children 2-11 years old Parent(s) with children 12-18 years old Parents are expected to develop a skill set to assist with more successfully identifying and delivering age appropriate consequences. As parents develop the ability to consistently enforce appropriate negative and positive consequences, it is expected that their children will demonstrate more compliant behaviors at home and at school. Participants will attend three components of the program prior to successful completion. These three components consist of Parenting Wisely - An interactive CD-ROM training program, traditional group therapy, and a mentor support program. Parenting WiselyParenting Wisely is a computer parent-training program, which does not require individuals to possess computer or literacy skills. Parents view case studies presented on the computer and respond to the material as they develop more effective parental strategies. Research examining Parenting Wisely indicates that using the program reduces child behavior problems, improves parenting skills and strengthens the relationship between adolescents and parents. Group Therapy Participants will attend and actively participate in group therapy sessions. Sessions will help parents process and develop their parenting skills in a supportive environment. They will be provided guidance and coaching for their newly developed parenting skills. Individuals must successfully complete the treatment goals of the group and develop a Parenting Plan prior to completing the Parenting Intervention Program. Mentor Support Research indicates that struggling parents often lack appropriate “role models” and would benefit from a relationship with a successful parent. Participants will be linked to a successful parent, either self-selected or a volunteer who assists with the program. All Mentors will undergo training before participating in the program. The Mentor’s purpose is to provide the participant a source of support, encouragement, and practical assistance without the fear of consequences.
